People are hating on ESPN and Caitlyn Jenner for her ESPY Award

Did ESPN pick Caitlyn Jenner for its ESPY Arthur Ashe Courage Award over injured Iraq veteran Noah Galloway?

Before you hit share or retweet, read this: The internet would like you to think so, but in reality, there’s been no indication the network was even considering Galloway for the award.

It was announced Monday that the award will be presented to Jenner at a July ceremony, so far scheduled to be her first public appearance since announcing her new identity.

But, the Washington Post reports, the announcement was met with controversy on social media as a meme spread claiming Galloway — who lost his left arm and leg as a soldier and is now a marathon runner, public speaker and Dancing with the Stars competitor — was the runner-up for the award.

As the Post points out, though, there was never any list of candidates released. No one knows if ESPN was considering Galloway or anyone other than Jenner for the award, which, last year, was awarded to Michael Sam, the first openly gay player in the NFL.

Snopes tracked the beginning of the rumor to a tweet from the Boston Herald‘s Gerry Callahan.

And, as tends to happen on the internet, a lot of people took that unsubstantiated information and shared it on their own social media sites.

The reality of the situation is that plenty of people are going to disagree with ESPN choosing Jenner for the award, just like plenty of people disagreed when Michael Sam won. But, as the Post sums it up, “It’s simply not correct to criticize ESPN for relegating the veteran to ‘runner-up’ status to Jenner.”
