Just when we began to feel overwhelmed by all the Caitlyn Jenner coverage, Jon Stewart stepped in.
He first starts out talking about how the media couldn’t talk about anything else besides the brave new Caitlyn Jenner, and he is pleasantly surprised by how positive all the clips he runs through are after assuming they would be judgmental and negative.

But his surprise was short-lived as he points out that now that Caitlyn is a woman, no one cares about anything but her looks. He said, “It is really heartening to see everyone not only accepting Caitlyn Jenner as a woman, but to waste no time in treating her like a woman.”
He points out how things work while giving complements to women. “Look, we want to give a woman a compliment here. We just want to make sure another woman gets taken down a peg or two. It’s how we maintain the balance.”

I get it. Everyone want to make sure they are being positive and all paying Jenner compliments and whatnot, but as Laverne Cox pointed out, there is more to Caitlyn (and all woman and all transgender people) than looks.
Maybe, along with opening the eyes of many Americans to the differences in people’s lives and the transgender world, we can also use this as an opportunity to recognize the absurdity of media coverage of women, as Stewart so brilliantly points out.
But alas, as Stewart says, “Welcome to being a woman in America.”
