OITNB cast shares inspiring stories about their own self-hate

Laverne Cox, Danielle Brooks and Uzo Aduba are all celebrated by us for their unique beauty, and now they share how and what they celebrate about themselves.

The Orange Is the New Black stars sat down with Essence to talk about body acceptance, how they have dealt with the things they don’t like about themselves, and turning their dislikes into loves.

Laverne Cox has a daily ritual she performs to make sure her self-esteem is right where it needs to be. “This is intense, and it’s hard. What I’ve been doing is looking in the mirror and listing all the things I have an issue with and then saying, ‘This is beautiful,'” she explained. “I just go down the list and tell myself, ‘You have to accept that this is you today.’ I make time to do this.”

Danielle Brooks explained that being a role model for women who are not a size 2 makes her feel fantastic. “Being [my size] in this industry is so rare,” she said, “but regular people look more like me than runway models. To show beauty in a different way really lights me up inside. That’s so cheesy, but it does.”

Uzo Aduba explained that what is now her beauty trademark was once a hated feature — but now she loves it. “For the majority of my first 18 years, I hated my gap. My mom would tell me that in Nigeria, it’s a sign of beauty. I was like, ‘We’re in Massachusetts.’

“Today there’s not a selfie or personal photo I take where I’m not smiling wide. It sometimes feels as if I’m making up for lost smiles.”

We absolutely love the attitudes of these women! It is inspiring us to embrace the things about our appearances we’re not entirely in love with — yet. We’re going to try Cox’s trick today — will you join us?
