Miley Cyrus got candid about her sexuality in a new interview with Paper Mag — showcasing herself in a different, more down-to-earth light than we’ve seen in a long time.

We’re used to seeing Miley Cyrus twerking and sticking out her tongue with crude gestures on the stage. We’re used to seeing her weird videos on Instagram that suggest she either isn’t quite all there or may need some help.
What we’re not used to seeing is a strong woman who knows who she is behind the facade of fame.
But despite all the bravado and the nude latex outfits, the 22-year-old pop star is in touch with herself, especially when it comes to her sexuality.
“I am literally open to every single thing that is consenting and doesn’t involve an animal and everyone is of age. Everything that’s legal, I’m down with. Yo, I’m down with any adult — anyone over the age of 18 who is down to love me,” she told the mag. “I don’t relate to being boy or girl, and I don’t have to have my partner relate to boy or girl.”

She even told Paper Mag that she’s had relationships with women that were just as meaningful and serious as her long-term widely publicized relationships with men (like Liam Hemsworth and Nick Jonas), she’s just kept it out of the spotlight.
She said she’s known about her sexuality since a young age and even confessed to her mother at only 14, “I remember telling her I admire women in a different way. And she asked me what that meant. And I said, I love them. I love them like I love boys. And it was so hard for her to understand. She didn’t want me to be judged and she didn’t want me to go to hell. But she believes in me more than she believes in any god. I just asked for her to accept me. And she has.”
Cyrus wants others to do the same as well.

And though she was raised a Christian, she also spoke in the interview about taking issue with fundamentalist beliefs and those who hold those beliefs and govern. “Those people [shouldn’t] get to make our laws. That’s f***ing insane.”
And though her language is as colorful as ever, her point is well placed and the article proves that despite Cyrus’ eccentric expressions, she deeply cares about the world and the people who live in it.
