We were all about denying the huge Game of Thrones slaughter tonight, until the star of the show confirmed it, that is.

I have to say, I’ve read the books, and I still didn’t expect the finale to head in the direction it did tonight. The books definitely leave Jon Snow’s demise more out in the open. And, while the Season 5 finale seemed to attempt the same, Kit Harington just confirmed that he’s “not coming back” to the show. So it’s official, people. Jon Snow is dead. Which means you can take all those amazing fan theories about the bastard of Winterfell and, well, tuck them away in a sad, dark place never to be seen again.
Harington confirmed his character’s death, explaining to Entertainment Weekly, “If anything in the future is not like that, then I don’t know about it — it’s only in [creators] David [Benioff] and Dan [D.B. Weiss] and [author] George’s heads. But I’ve been told I’m dead. I’m dead. I’m not coming back next season. So that’s all I can tell you, really.”
Excuse me while I grab some more tissues.

Really, of all the characters, Jon Snow was the one we wanted to see triumph the most. How many more Starks can die before the show just becomes about the villains? Season 5 really has left me feeling lost in the grand scope of the show more than any other character’s death yet.
And because the books left it open, I had really refused to except that Jon’s death was actually a thing… until now. Tonight was the night that ruined all of my Game of Thrones‘ theories. What does it matter if Jon Snow actually wasn’t Ned Stark’s bastard if he’s dead? He’s not going to marry Dany and be the future king now anyways, so, so much for those brilliant theories.
If there’s one smidgen of light to come out of all of this, it’s that we haven’t seen the last of Harington. Far from it, in fact.

“I’m looking for movies for next year,” the actor explained. “I’m in a very lucky place — I can turn things down and do what I want to do. There’s a couple movies I’m looking at, but I can’t really talk about them yet. I might take a holiday. I might try writing. I’m trying to figure it out.”
And while he figures out what’s next for him, we’ll be certain about what’s next for the show. Because Jon Snow’s death signals a significant shift in what we’ve come to know and love about Game of Thrones. Forget, “Winter is coming.” A Game of Thrones without Jon Snow means winter is here.
