Jennifer Lawrence has conquered the wage gap with her new film

The Sony hack last year revealed the sad fact that even A-list Hollywood actresses are victims of the wage gap.

Thanks to emails leaked in the hack, it was revealed that Jennifer Lawrence was making significantly less than her male American Hustle costars, even though she had an equally as competitive résumé and role in the film.

But now it appears that Lawrence has conquered that obstacle, making the rest of us hopeful that the gap between men and women’s pay is closing, albeit slowly but surely.

For her new film, Passengers, which was just given the green light by Sony, Lawrence will be making a reported $20 million. Her costar in the film, Chris Pratt, is making $12 million, which is an increase for his previous $10 million rate.

It’s important to note that feminism is about equality. Lawrence did not “win” here because she is making more than Pratt. Rather, her experience and star power — if you will — have been taken into consideration and she is getting paid more based on experience. Pratt is relatively newer on the scene, having just broken into the blockbuster club last summer with Guardians of the Galaxy. With an Oscar under her belt and a host of high-grossing films like X-Men and The Hunger Games, it makes sense that Lawrence would make more.

For those who aren’t familiar with the entertainment industry and an actor’s pay, it is based on careful negotiations. Actors are always trying to increase their rates from their previous films so they can be seen as more valuable assets within the industry. Lawrence was paid only $500,000 for the first Hunger Games installment, but she made $10 million for Catching Fire.

And that’s just the upfront deal. The backend and residuals are where actors make the bulk of their money if they are well-known enough, and Lawrence isn’t missing out for Passengers. While she only received a 7 percent backend for American Hustle — while the males made 9 percent —she will receive 30 percent of the profits after Passengers breaks even, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Now that’s what we call a raise.

Especially given that Passengers, which is described as a big-budget romantic sci-fi drama, is slated to be a huge movie for Sony.

The film is scheduled to begin filming in July 2015.
