You might not realize you know Kacey Musgraves.
Or you might know her music and think she’s hitting a little too close to home with her lyrics about small-town life.
But after her first album, Same Trailer Different Park, dropped a few years back, she realized that she really didn’t care if people didn’t know her or even if people didn’t like her. In a recent Peopleinterview, Musgraves said, “People are always going to find a way to be offended about something.”
The young up-and-comer’s hit from that album, “Follow Your Arrow,” had lines like, “roll up a joint, or don’t,” and talked about how you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t in just about any situation. She continued, saying, “I won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. I’m cool with not being the biggest superstar on the planet.”
She added, “I don’t let people’s approval make or break what I’m doing.”

And I think that’s great because her hit-home lyrics are so on point. She preaches love and self-acceptance, and even though she wasn’t trying to, she became a shining star to many of her fans and even a close friend.
She told of one story, saying, “After high school, my best friend came out to me, and he was like, ‘I don’t feel like I can be myself, and you’re the first person I’m telling.’ That is still a lot of people’s reality. [If] a kid feels like they can walk a little taller because of something I sang, I’m inspired by that.”

She also said she’s encouraged by the other strong women around her, like former tour mate Katy Perry. “You can put this on the record: I’ve seen Katy Perry’s proverbial ball. She’s had some doors slammed in her face, and it’s cool to see that if you keep doing what you think is good, it will work out,” she said.
Love, acceptance, strength and encouragement all wrapped up in one pretty and talented package. Musgrave’s latest album, Pageant Material, will drop in just a few days on June 23, and even if country music isn’t your cup of tea, you should check it out. Everyone could use a little steel guitar and some sharp-witted lyrics in their lives.
