MTV’s White People gets real and accurate about racial stereotypes (VIDEO)

MTV is getting real about race in the new documentary White People.

Discussions of race and privilege are hot topics right now as the nation discusses the many police shootings as well as the strange case of Rachel Dolezal. For many, the concept of privilege is abstract and a hard topic to discuss candidly. MTV’s documentary White People could change that, especially for young people.

The Hollywood Reporter announced the project, which comes from Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas. Vargas will follow five young white people as he explores how they see their racial identity and how they navigate a multicultural society. Additionally, Vargas interviewed students across the country about what they think privilege means. The first clip from the doc is eye-opening and refreshingly honest.

White People is part of a larger MTV campaign called Look Different. The campaign’s goal is to spread awareness and increase knowledge of discrimination based on race, gender and sexual orientation. White People is set to premiere Wednesday, July 22, at 8/7c on MTV. The documentary will later be shared across multiple platforms including MTV.com, the MTV app and YouTube so that it can reach as many people as possible.
