Ava DuVernay reveals the black superhero she’d want to direct

Ava DuVernay has been tapped to direct Chadwick Boseman in Black Panther for Marvel — due out in July 2018 — but over the weekend she took to Twitter to show her support for a real-life black superhero.

The Selma director tweeted a message of support for activist Bree Newsome, who she referred to as a “black superhero I admire.”

Newsome was arrested over the weekend after she removed the Confederate flag from in front of the State Capital building in Columbia, South Carolina, and there has been overwhelming support for her actions via social media.

While it’s not certain if DuVernay will ever get to make a movie about Newsome, the chances of her making a movie about a fictional superhero are relatively good, as she revealed during an interview with Entertainment Weekly last week.

“I mean, is it a huge goal that I’m thinking about and striving for? No. But if there was the right story, absolutely,” DuVernay told the publication of the possibility of her directing superhero films. “I think it’s important that our heroes reflect more than one kind of person.”
