For over two decades, Jim Carrey has brought endless entertainment into the lives of many. Be it by making us laugh until we cry with classics like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Dumb and Dumber, or just plain making us cry with tearjerkers like The Truman Show, Carrey has delighted audiences with his talent.
Though the actor may be treasured as an entertainer, that doesn’t mean that he hasn’t ticked off fans with his personal opinions. While it’s important to note that he’s never lacking in supporters, he’s encountered an awful lot of haters. Be it gun control, violence or public health issues, Carrey isn’t afraid to say what he’s thinking, even if it means causing a little ruckus.
Here’s a look at all the times Carrey angered fans by speaking his mind.

Carrey raised eyebrows this week when he took to Twitter to voice his opinion about the bill signed by California Governor Jerry Brown that will require all children attending public school to be vaccinated by 2016.

Though Carrey clarified that he is “pro-vaccine/anti-neurotoxin,” he still came under fire by some staunchly pro-vaccine Twitter users who called him names, told him he is an “idiot actor” and implored him to delete his account.
2. His refusal to promote Kick-Ass 2
Carrey earned a paycheck as Colonel Stars and Stripes in 2013’s Kick-Ass 2, but refused to do any promotion for the film in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy.
“I did Kickass a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence…my apologies to others involve[d] with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart,” Carrey wrote on Twitter.
Critics of Carrey’s stance, including costar Chloë Grace Moretz, argued that the actor knew the film contained violence when he signed on, and also pointed out that the movie is a work of fiction and in no way based in reality.
3. “Testing” Dave Letterman for Ebola
On a Late Show appearance during the 2014 Ebola scare, Carrey joked about the outbreak and the public’s response to it by pretending to screen Letterman for the potentially fatal ailment.
It seemed like he was trying to poke fun at society’s reaction to the situation, but some people were far from amused. “Listen I have a great sense of humor, but Ebola is nothing to joke about,” wrote one commenter on People‘s website, whose sentiments were echoed elsewhere on the internet. “This is a deadly disease. Very insensitive when you think about all the people dying from Ebola in Africa and other places.”
4. His Funny or Die video for “Cold Dead Hand”
Needless to say, Carrey’s satirical skit mocking Charlton Heston freaked out pro-gun activists everywhere. In the skit, Carrey plays the lead singer of Lonesome Earl and the Clutterbusters and he sings the song “Cold Dead Hand.”
“‘Cold Dead Hand’ is abt u heartless motherf%**ers unwilling 2 bend 4 the safety of our kids,” Carey tweeted in response to the 2013 video. “Sorry if you’re offended by the word safety!”
5. Calling for the end of organized religion
Carrey is vocal about his spirituality and relationship with God, but he offended his fans who support religion when he tweeted that he felt organized religion was fading.

Some Twitter users seized Carrey’s tweet as an opportunity to call him ignorant, threaten to unfollow him and tell him they felt sorry for him.
6. His anti-gun tweets
In early 2013, Carrey again freaked out the pro-gun camp when he voiced his opinions about gun ownership on Twitter.

Of course, Twitter blew up in response, and Fox News sounded off on the actor’s commentary with a post titled “Jim Carrey’s Nasty Gun Dig.”
7. His dis of the Catholic church
Carrey took aim at the Catholic church’s stance on gay rights in 2013, which quickly turned into a jab at the many scandals that have faced the religion regarding the sexual assault of children by priests.
