And his 1-year-old daughter, Royalty, will be right in the middle of it.

According to Us Weekly, Brown just filed court documents in Houston to establish himself as the legal father of the little girl he had with Nia Guzman.

Even though Brown has been acting like a father and paying child support for months, establishing his legal paternity in the court system allows him to legally challenge Royalty’s mom, who is demanding $15,000 a month in child support instead of the $2,500 a month Brown is voluntarily paying now, according to the site.

Brown found out about his daughter months after she was born, but immediately stepped up by financially supporting the little girl. One theory about why the “Ayo” singer is just now taking steps to establish his legal paternity? He’s worried Guzman will cut him off from seeing Royalty if he doesn’t cough up the child support she’s demanding, even though he’s already paying what he thinks is fair. He’s already spoken about situations in which Guzman has denied his legal rights to see Royalty, and with legal paternity established, it could become more difficult for her to do so.

A lot has changed in my life, a lot of mistakes, a lot of lessons learned,” Brown told reporters at the 2015 BET Awards last Sunday. “The best thing, I’m most thankful for is my daughter. At the end of the day, love is love.”

It’s a good thing Brown seems willing to focus on taking care of Royalty. He and his longtime on-again, off-again girlfriend, Karrueche Tran, split earlier this year after the media caught wind of the fact that Brown had fathered Royalty while the two were together.
