Rihanna‘s new video for “Bitch Better Have My Money” is full of bloody violence, but one of the stars says if that’s all we see, then we’re majorly missing the message.
Featuring the kidnapping, rape and torture of the wife of an accountant who has wronged the star, the video’s violence is shocking — but model Rachel Roberts, who plays the victim, says that isn’t the point.

“Whether or not you like what she’s doing in the video, Rihanna is portraying a strong woman, who is fighting back, even if her methods are obviously highly questionable,’ Roberts told TheGuardian.
“Beyond that, I don’t think it’s particularly useful to argue the politics of the video — it was always meant to be over-the-top and not taken too seriously.”
But not everyone agrees with the idea that the video has some sort of hidden feminist message.
Helen Lewis of the New Statesman summed it up perfectly: “It was not very feminist — not even very hashtag feminist — of Rihanna to ‘torture that poor rich lady.’ That is because it is not very feminist to torture women. Even if they are white. Even if they are rich. Even if you are a woman yourself. Sorry if this comes as a surprise.”

Watch the video and decide for yourself — but fair warning, as we’ve already said, it’s super violent and graphic.
