In a (somewhat strange) interview, Kim Richards claims she loves sobriety. But, does she love it more than being a reality TV star?
After checking herself out of rehab two months earlier than she was intending on staying, TheReal Housewives of Beverly Hills star Kim Richards sat down for an interview with Entertainment Tonight‘s Nischelle Turner. In the interview, where, to be honest, Richards doesn’t look particularly, um, alert, the reality TV star talks about how she “loves sobriety” and has “always loved sobriety.”

“Relapsing was very hard for me,” Richards confessed. “It was not easy. I have to say, don’t take this wrong, but I really wanted to go to treatment because I needed a break from what I was going through at home.”
Richards then went on to talk about the stress she’s been under in her personal life as of late. Her ex-husband, Monty, has cancer, and she’s been caring for him; her son was sick; she had to give away her beloved dog; and she and her sister, Kyle, weren’t speaking (and possibly still aren’t) after Kim’s dog bit Kyle’s daughter. No doubt, Kim has a lot going on right now, so it’s understandable why she would want a break from life. We all want that time and again. But, as it goes without saying, a rehab facility isn’t the best place for that.

But, let’s not focus on that. Let’s talk about Richards’ juggernaut reality TV show, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, for a second here. Not too long ago, it was reported that Richards was fired from RHOBH by producers who felt she — and her addiction — were a “liability for the show.” Kim apparently went missing after her daughter Brooke’s wedding in Mexico during a relapse. And, when she wouldn’t answer any of the calls from producers, they, understandably, decided to pull the plug on her.
However, in an odd twist, during her ET interview, Richards claims that, although she still hasn’t spoken to producers, they’ve “asked her back.”
Wait, what?

I’m not making any accusations here, but like I said, the interview is somewhat strange, so I’m a little bit on the fence about what to believe. As an outsider, though, it kind of seems like Richards wants to go back to the show. Totally could be wrong, but the way she said, “They’ve asked me back,” makes it seem a little bit like wishful thinking — either that or they did ask her back and she’s more than happy to return.
If not, don’t you think we would have heard something along the lines of, “I’m not going to be returning, I’m going to focus on my sobriety.” (Which is exactly what she should do!)

Look, we all love reality TV shows (at least us low-brow folk do), but at the end of the day, is it really ever a good idea for the people on them? How many bridges have been burned amongst friends on these kinds of shows? How many times has fame gotten to people’s heads? They’re kind of toxic, actually, and for someone like Richards, who ought to put herself in a calm, stress-free environment with good people, it’s really not a good idea. Whether she was asked back or not, it’s probably not super healthy for Richards to return, right?

At the end of the day, Richards makes good TV. Her strange behavior is often a topic of discussion after a RHOBH episode, but I wish she could see that this isn’t good for her. It isn’t healthy. What she needs more than anything right now is to get out of the spotlight and focus on herself and herself only. Being in front of the camera will only add pressure to an already high-pressured situation — and clearly it isn’t helping her relationship with her sister.
I’m pulling for Richards; really, I am. I hope that someone can persuade her not to do the show if producers do, in fact, ask her to return. Because I have a feeling she’s not going to say “no” on her own volition.
