Fuller House has only just begun work on its first few episodes, but executive producers have already made at least one major change, and it’s for the better. As star Candace Cameron Bure recently revealed, D.J. Tanner’s story line on the upcoming sequel has been tweaked so that it’s not quite as depressing.
The initial description for the Netflix series found D.J. newly widowed and expecting her third child. The show has since altered the premise in an important way: Instead of being pregnant right at the start of the show, D.J. will already be a mom of three — similarly to the way the originalFull Housebegan.
“She’s actually not pregnant anymore. The baby’s been born,” Cameron Bure revealed at the Television Critics Association panel this week. “We didn’t start it off quite so heavy, so some more time has passed than they originally intended.”
Well, that’s a relief. Starting off with the main character as a widow is heavy enough, but having her also be pregnant makes it feel doubly somber. At least, if her character’s baby is already born and some time has passed after the death of her husband, it leaves more room for humor. Plus, who could object to having another cute kid on the show?
“It is tragedy that starts off the show, which was like the original Full House, but the themes are always heartfelt, it’s always a situation you can always learn something from,” Cameron Bure said of the change. “Tonally, it will feel the same as the original Full House, which is heartfelt and funny, and family-friendly but… current. It’s today’s time.”

And don’t worry — though it might start off a little sad, D.J. definitely won’t be dealing with it alone. She asks her best friend Kimmy Gibbler (Andrea Barber), who is now a single mom, and sister Stephanie Tanner (Jodie Sweetin) to move in with her to help raise her family. Sounds familiar, right? Bob Saget, John Stamos, Lori Loughlin and Dave Coulier will also show up at some point to reprise their respective roles as Danny Tanner, Uncle Jesse, Aunt Becky and Joey.
Oh, and if you’re wondering about D.J.’s high school sweetheart, Steve, let’s just say that there’s a very strong chance he may also make a comeback. “Rest assured, Steve is not dead,” Cameron Bure said. Yes! I can’t wait to see those two — and all the rest of the awesome cast — back on-screen together.
