Why Gwyneth Paltrow doesn’t deserve all the hate she receives

Are you sitting down? Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t come up with the term “conscious uncoupling.” We’ve been living in a sea of lies, people!

If there’s one thing Gwyneth Paltrow has been closely associated with — and endlessly mocked for — in the past year, it’s the term “conscious uncoupling.” Last year, in a lengthy post on her website Goop, Paltrow revealed that she and husband Chris Martin were divorcing after more than 10 years of marriage. After the post went live, all anyone could focus on was the title of the piece, which was, yes, “Conscious Uncoupling.” But now, it turns out that Gwynnie isn’t even the one who came up with the term.

In an interview with Fast Company, Paltrow claims that it was the editorial director of Goop, Elise Loehnen, who titled her post “Conscious Uncoupling,” unbeknownst to Paltrow. (The term was actually coined by philosopher Dr. Habib Sadeghi and his wife Dr. Shahrzad Sami.) Paltrow had no clue she was going to become the poster child for the phrase until it was on the site. “When I announced that I was separating on the website, Elise titled the piece ‘Conscious Uncoupling,’ and I had no idea,” she said. Nevertheless, though, Paltrow has been a staunch advocate for the term, despite the fact that it made her the punchline of thousands of jokes. And this is one of the reasons I love her. Instead of disassociating herself with a — let’s face it, silly — phrase that she didn’t even come up with, she stood by it. That’s called integrity, my friends.

I know it’s become kind of The Thing to hate on Gwyneth Paltrow and her often unrealistic and impractical suggestions, but I’m a card-carrying fan of the woman, and unless she strangles a puppy, will continue to be. And here’s why you should be, too.

She can laugh at herself

Last year on Ellen, Paltrow poked fun at herself in a cute skit, where she talks about how she’s “just” an Oscar winner. “When I’m at home with my kids, I’m still just Academy Award-winner Gwyneth Paltrow,” the actress joked.

She has a good relationship with her ex

OK, fine. So, the term “conscious uncoupling” is asinine, but whatever the heck she and her ex are doing, it’s working. Paltrow and Chris Martin had what seems like one of the most amicable, civilized divorces in history. Paltrow even posted the sweetest Father’s Day message for him on Instagram this year. How bad could the woman be?

When asked about fellow lifestyle brand “competitors” such as Jessica Alba and Reese Witherspoon, Paltrow sweetly said, “I [felt] very proud when Jessica was on the cover of Forbes. I think that’s amazing. You can quantitatively say, ‘Look what she’s done, she’s been able to conceive of a business and scale it to that size, in that amount of time.'”

Her food is the bomb

Okay, so you find GP annoying. But, let me ask you this: Do you find grilled peaches and burrata annoying? Didn’t think so.
