Grey’s Anatomy: Shonda Rhimes weighs in on Katherine Heigl’s possible return

If you were holding out hope for a real resolution to Alex and Izzie’s love story on Grey’s Anatomy, Shonda Rhimes has officially all but killed it.

It’s no secret that Shonda Rhimes isn’t that fond of Katherine Heigl, but there was a strong contingent of fans who remained hopeful Rhimes would push past that and bring Heigl back to Grey’s anyway.

But Rhimes seems to have well and truly shut down that idea once and for all. Michael Ausiello, of TVLine, explained how he had a face-to-face conversation with Rhimes, during which he dared to ask if she would consider bringing Heigl’s character, Izzie Stevens, back for a one or two-episode arc to bring closure to the Alex and Izzie story line.

In short: Ausiello got shut down pretty quickly. “‘No,’ she interjected, shaking her head and leaving little room for me to wiggle. ‘I’m done with that story. I’ve turned that idea over in my mind a thousand times and thought about how it would go. And I don’t think so,'” Ausiello explained of how the conversation went down.

He also said he gave some thought to pushing the issue a little further, but he elected not to given, “Rhimes’ body language and tone were sending [him] a message that was loud, clear and concise, and it went something like this: Ausiello, it’s time to move on.”

We would like to give Ausiello mass credit on two fronts: 1. For daring to question Rhimes on the matter in the first place, and 2. For wisely reading the situation and not raising the ire of Rhimes, who seems like the kind of person one shouldn’t cross.

But still, while we are glad to have a resolute answer on whether or not Izzie and Alex will ever reunite, we’re pretty bummed at what that answer is. Jo is perfectly lovely, and we like her, but there are those of us who will never be able to shake the feeling that Izzie was, and always will be, Alex’s one true love.
