Celebrate Supernatural‘s 10th anniversary with these flashback moments of Sam and Dean Winchester from the pilot episode. There’s no doubt these beloved TV brothers have changed a lot since entering fans’ lives.
Sept. 13, 2015, is a special day. Why’s that? It’s Supernatural’s 10th anniversary, that’s why. Can you believe it’s been 10 years since the first episode of Supernatural premiered? Who would’ve thought that Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles would continue to play Sam and Dean Winchester, respectively, for 11 straight seasons? It’s no secret that The CW series fluctuates when it comes to ratings, but the fandom keeps tuning in and showing support when it comes to their favorite TV brothers. Yes, that includes me.
Seeing as it’s such a meaningful day, what better way to rejoice in this milestone than by looking back on the pilot and observing just how much Sam and Dean have changed since our very first meeting with the brothers.

Dean, then vs. now
1. He was the so-called bad boy

When first watching Supernatural, Dean throws off the vibe that he’s the “bad boy” of the series, someone who doesn’t follow the rules and is a big troublemaker. That still can be said for the older Winchester brother, but over the series, it became apparent that Dean is actually the protector and the trustworthy brother. He’d go above and beyond for his family. Dean would never choose a demon over his own blood, unlike some other character we know.
2. His love for Sammy wasn’t as prevalent

As fans have watched over the course of 10 seasons, Dean loves Sam immensely. He would die (and has) for his baby brother. There’s no doubt that Dean cares for his brother in the pilot, but that powerful love we’ve watched over 200 episodes isn’t as strong in the first episode. Plus, it might have something to do with the fact that Sam and Dean weren’t as close during Season 1 and their bond solidified as they continued to hunt side by side.
3. He’s in a much lighter and happier place

Remember in Season 10, Episode 7 (“Girls, Girls, Girls”), where Dean told Cole that he’s been touched by the darkness ever since becoming a demon? Dean also told him there’s no saving him and he knows how he will die at the edge of a blade or the barrel of a gun. Well, in the pilot, Dean is definitely in a much lighter and happier place, whereas now the 10-plus years of hunting have really taken a toll on his soul.

Sam, then vs. now
1. He was the so-called ‘golden boy’

Unlike Dean, the “bad boy,” Sam was the “golden boy,” as stated in the pilot. He had his life in order, was planning on becoming a lawyer, escaped the life of a hunter and was with Jessica, the love of his life. As much as Sammy looked like the so-called good guy, at times, he became more of a liability to Dean. Whether he was drinking demon blood, choosing a demon over his own brother, not trying to save Dean from purgatory or letting his brother turn into a vampire (granted, he didn’t have a soul at the time), Sam’s good-natured character was definitely flipped on its head — and continues to be.
2. He’s not all about family

Law school, his career and Jessica are the three things Sam cares about most in the first episode. His love for family isn’t really there, especially since he removed himself from Dean, his dad, John, and the hunting life. Can you blame him for not wanting to be a hunter? No, definitely not, but Sam’s love for Dean, John and his other family members has grown throughout each episode.
3. His hair was a lot shorter

Ever notice how Sam’s hair changes every season? It’s true. Die-hard fans can tell each season apart, thanks to the length of Sam’s hair. In the beginning, Sam’s hair is short, then he grows it a bit longer, then it gets even longer and, thankfully, he keeps it that nice chin length. Yeah, JarPad sure has a nice head of hair.
With all of that said and done, what are you waiting for? Go rewatch the Supernatural pilot and celebrate Sam and Dean like the true fan that you are.
