Mayim Bialik receives hatred comments & threats for being religious

Mayim Bialik will forever be Blossom to us ’80s babies, and Amy Farrah Fowler from The Big Bang Theory is slowly creeping in, too.

But in Hollywood circles, Bialik is known for something very different. Her faith.

Bialik is Jewish and regaled to Fox 411 how she practices her own brand of Judaism that fits her life and beliefs. She says that’s OK but that sometimes it gets her hatred, too.

“I think in general it’s never going to be trendy to be observant or religious in Hollywood circles,” she bluntly stated. “There are people I know of faith and we tend to congregate together. I study Jewish texts weekly. That’s something really positive to me — when you’re a person of faith, it stays with you all the time.”

She explains that though she is a scientist and an intellectual, she can still have both God and science. And she had made it work by taking what she believes and creating the rest around her own life because she doesn’t necessarily like the “bureaucracy of organized religion,” but says that she has “an unwavering faith in a power greater than myself, and I don’t think that will change any more than my belief in gravity will change. I believe in [Jewish law] but I also believe in the permeability and changeability in the structure of Jewish law, and I think Judaism has always adjusted to the times that it lived in, and it’s adjusting in the time we are in now.”

And while she might be the odd woman out in Hollywood, her faith got her into some hot water with fans and critics, too, recently.

Bialik recalled getting threats and a lot of hatred for a recent trip to Israel.

She said, “I’ve gotten a lot of negative attention for visiting Israel. That’s what amazing… simply by going to Israel this summer and saying nothing more than, ‘I’ve gone to Israel,’ I got the same amount of hatred and threats and anti-Semitism for actually making a statement trying to support people whether I like it or not are serving in an army.”

Her trip was to visit a friend who is serving in the Israeli Defense Forces.

She continued, “It really doesn’t matter what I support or believe. The fact that I’m Jewish and go there is enough — that should be alarming to most people.”
