Cara Delevingne‘s newest ad goes against everything she’s stood for in recent months.

The 23-year-old model and PaperTowns star recently told The Times that she was leaving her modeling career behind because the work made her feel dehumanized and “hollow.” She took particular issue with the way she was sexualized, especially earlier in her career.
“I am a bit of a feminist and it makes me feel sick,” she said at the time. “It’s horrible and it’s disgusting… [these are] young girls. You start when you are really young and you do, you get subjected to… not great stuff.”
Now, less than a month later, her newest ad, for Yves Saint Laurent’s Rouge Pur Couture lipstick, has dropped and Delevingne’s involvement in the campaign goes against everything she previously said about her past experience with modeling.
In the racy new ad, Delevingne enters the room dressed in a conservative pantsuit. As she applies coats of bright red lipstick, her clothes disappear piece by piece, until she’s wearing nothing but the lipstick… and a pair of sky-high black pumps.
What reason is there, exactly, for a woman to be naked in an advertisement for lipstick? There aren’t any that I can think of, other than to reduce her to a sexual object, i.e. not a human. For someone who has so much of a problem with the dehumanizing nature of the modeling industry, the ad is awfully dehumanizing.
If Delevingne is going to claim to be a feminist, she needs to walk the walk, too. I applauded her for her earlier comments about the industry, but she’s going to have to try a lot harder to keep my support.
