In the latest edition of the public trying to figure out Caitlyn Jenner, the reality TV star’s interview on Ellen didn’t help to clear anything up.
During her appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show that will air next week, Jenner tried to explain the evolution of her views on gay marriage, much to the confusion and chagrin of Ellen and the bemusement of commenters online.
She said, “I was not for it! I thought, ‘I’m a traditionalist…’ I kind of like tradition, and [marriage] was always between a man and a woman. And I’m thinking, ‘I don’t quite get it…'”

People online are honestly bewildered.
One person said, “I’m confused then. Because if she always considered herself a woman, authentically (her words, not mine), and she married women then how did she not view herself as a lesbian.”
Another pointed out, “talk about a walking contradiction… Jenner is one very confused individual.”
One person thinks Jenner is quite the hypocrite, saying, “[She] sometimes talks out of both sides of [her] mouth. Hard to believe [she] even knows what [she’s] talking about at all.”
I wholeheartedly believe that I don’t understand what anyone who is transgender goes through, but in an effort to understand what she is saying, I like to think that years — decades, even — of having to be a man and suppressing all her feelings, thoughts and actions in an effort to be “normal” may have something to do with her beliefs. Basically, she had to be a man for her entire life, so it’s not entirely surprising that those thoughts normalized into her expressed feelings.

One other commenter felt that same way, saying, “This doesn’t surprise me. I think part of suppressing her feelings included taking such a conservative stance on gay marriage.”
And while her stance on marriage equality might be confusing, her thoughts about dating in her new life are actually pretty spot-on. She had her relationships and has a fulfilling family life, so maybe she really isn’t thinking about jumping into the dating pool just yet.
