Irwin, who is competing for the mirror ball with partner Derek Hough, said that her dad, the late conservationist Steve Irwin, would have been over the moon to see her on this new television adventure.

I wish he was here and could be a part of this,” Irwin told InTouch. “But I believe he’d be happy and proud that I’m trying something out of my comfort zone.”

In fact, she said, her drive to be successful on DWTS comes directly from him.

“Life was filled with adventure,” Irwin said. “And like him, I’m very passionate and determined. And of course, working with animals is in my DNA and always will be.”

So where does she see herself when her turn on DWTS wraps — besides hopefully with the mirror ball trophy in her hand?

“Working at the Australia Zoo and expanding our conservation work,” she said. “Dad always said, ‘I don’t care if people remember me, I just care if people remember my message.’ So hopefully, I’ll be carrying out his legacy.”

On this week’s DWTS season premiere, Irwin and Backstreet Boys singer Nick Carter tied for first place.
