In response to the question about who’s to blame for body shaming, DeLaria joked, “The Republican party. I’m going to go with the Republican party; I blame them for everything.”
She then got serious, explaining that, “It’s kind of twofold. I think we live in a society that thinks of women as less-than, and it’s ingrained in the way that we are raised. For example, when a baby is born, if it’s a male baby, you can throw him up in the air, you can toss him around, you juggle him, you make him laugh.”
But if it’s a female child, the scenario is very different.

“If it’s a girl you go, ‘Oh, she’s a little piece of porcelain, let’s not break her.'” She continued, “It just starts from moment one, so it’s part nurture, and it’s part nature in that respect, if you know what I’m saying. Because you can’t just say men [are responsible for body shaming] because a lot of women buy into it, too.”
But DeLaria has a very positive message for all the women of the world.
“Women need to love themselves and who they are, and what they are,” she said. “And the onus is on us way more than men.” She then went on to describe scenarios that support this statement.
“Men are allowed to grow old gracefully; women have to have plastic surgery. Men are allowed to be any weight they want; women have to be thin. It’s part of the sexism in our society, and I am here to say, ladies, you are beautiful no matter what your size, and I’m the girl that’ll do ya.” LOL.

While on the red carpet, DeLaria’s Orange Is the New Black costar, Danielle Brooks, had something inspiring to say about body confidence, too.
“I think it starts with yourself, you gotta find the confidence within yourself first because people can say whatever they want, but you have to be confident within yourself to know that you’re beautiful just the way that you are. And let the haters do what they do,” she told us.
