Gigi Hadid and Joe Jonas have a more turbulent history than anyone ever expected.

On Monday, Hadid hosted a Periscope chat and revealed some telling details about her relationship with Jonas. Most notably, she shut him down hard during a very awkward first encounter.
“We met at the Grammys when I was 13 years old,” 20-year-old Hadid shared. “And he asked me to a baseball game, and I said, ‘No.'”
The reason, however, might be the most awkward, surprising, hilarious part of the whole story.
“I was so nervous,” Hadid continued. “I literally didn’t even know what it meant to hang out with a boy. And also, Grammys are on a Sunday, and I didn’t want to tell him that I had school the next day, so I was like, ‘No, maybe next time.'”

We all know how the story ends — Hadid and 26-year-old Jonas have been dating since May. But at the time, Jonas seemed to handle the rejection pretty well, even though he was in front of his then-bandmates, Kevin and Nick Jonas. According to Hadid, he slipped his phone number to her mom, Yolanda Foster, before the end of the night.
“[He] wrote it on a piece of paper and gave it to my mom,” Hadid dished. “And then we”ve been friends ever since. Except now. We’re more than friends, obvs.”
This story just makes us really curious to know how much of a role Hadid’s mom had to play in getting the two of them together. Hadid split from her longtime boyfriend, Cody Simpson, back in May, just days before she was first spotted out with Jonas. Did her mom encourage her to look for love in her longtime close friend? If so, it would just prove that mothers always know best.
