Matt Damon is quickly shedding his nice-guy image. First he mansplained diversity to a black director, and now he says gay actors should hide their sexuality.
Damon’s campaign to deflect attention from BFF Ben Affleck allegedly cheating on Jennifer Garner has just taken another turn. While promoting his new movie The Martian, Damon said coming out can be career suicide for an actor, and actors become less believable the more audiences know about their personal lives.

“Rupert Everett was openly gay and this guy — more handsome than anybody, a classically trained actor — it’s tough to make the argument that he didn’t take a hit for being out,” he said in an interview with The Guardian.
“I think it must be really hard for actors to be out publicly. But in terms of actors, I think you’re a better actor the less people know about you, period. And sexuality is a huge part of that,” he continued. “Whether you’re straight or gay, people shouldn’t know anything about your sexuality because that’s one of the mysteries that you should be able to play.”
Hiding one’s sexuality and personal life didn’t seem to be that big a deal to him when Damon, the straight, married father of three, played Liberace’s childless gay lover Scott Thorson in Behind the Candelabra.
