Break out a box of tissues for this one, folks, because it’s got an ending like Old Yeller.
After making the heartbreaking decision that pet owners are all too often faced with, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson posted a sweet tribute to announce the death of his dog, Brutus. Little Brutus suffered from poisoning after eating a mushroom in Johnson’s yard and he and his longtime girlfriend, Lauren Hashian, were forced to end the pup’s suffering by putting him down.
“Another reminder that we have to live and love as greatly as we can today, because tomorrow is never guaranteed,” wrote Johnson. “At approximately 11:15pm last night myself and @laurenhashianofficial had to make the painful decision to end Brutus’ suffering by taking him off life support and sending his soul to pup heaven. I held his lil’ paw as he was finally at peace.”

Johnson went on to clarify what happened to Brutus and warn fellow pet owners to be vigilant in checking the areas in which their dogs play for poisonous mushrooms so that others can avoid the same tragedy.

It’s an especially sad ending for Brutus, who seemed to have no shortage of adventures in his short life.
Johnson posted an adorable photo of himself with Brutus and Hobbs over Labor Day weekend, telling the story of how he saved Brutus from nearly drowning the first day he was in the Johnson household.
“I set them both down and they both take off in a full sprint and fall right into the deep end of our pool,” Johnson recalled. “HOBBS immediately starts doggy paddling while BRUTUS (like a brick) sinks head first to the bottom of the pool. I take off into a full sprint, fully clothed, dive in the pool, swim to the bottom, rescue my brick, I mean BRUTUS, and bring him back to the edge of the pool.”

Then, just one week after his near-drowning experience, Brutus ended up back at the vet with some “north/south action,” according to Johnson.
