The X-Files trailer sets us up to expect these 6 things to happen (VIDEO)

Hold on to your tinfoil hats, The X-Files fans, because Mulder and Scully are back and they’re bringing their friends.

If you’re anything like me, you positively cannot wait until The X-Files returns to Fox. In fact, you may even be counting down the days (it’s 116, BTW) until the most awesome of FBI teams returns to our television screens.

Well, Fox just gave us a trailer to watch over and over again as we chew our fingernails in anticipation, and it promises all the right kinds of conspiratorial fun. Take a look.

Here’s a look at what we can look forward to when the show airs this January.

1. Terrorist, I mean alien, I mean terrorist… attacks

The original series predicted a massive alien attack would strike on Dec. 22, 2012, and ended with Mulder hypothesizing to Scully that while they may appear to be powerless against the invasion now, “I want to believe that if we listen to what’s speaking, it can give us the power to save ourselves.” Well, it’s 2016, so something must have changed — but what, exactly? The trailer starts with a voice-over telling Mulder that a terrorist attack utilizing alien technology is imminent, while images of nuclear bombs go off on-screen. I don’t know what Fox has cooking up for us, but it looks to be huge.

2. Skeptical Scully

One of the trademark elements of The X-Files was the pairing of opposites Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson). Mulder, a true believer in the supernatural, was constantly at odds with his dubious partner, Scully — a combination that lent itself to plenty of conflict, laughs and sexual tension. So fans were understandably thrilled when, in the 2008 feature film The X Files: I Want to Believe, it appeared the team had finally become a couple. The trailer for The X-Files revival, however, makes it appear that they’ve split up, and that Scully will once again be playing skeptic to Mulder’s zealot.

3. Alien-hybrid babies

Oh, holy asteroids! Alien-hybrid babies are back — ’nuff said.

4. Pencils in the ceiling

The iconic basement office where the X-files were housed is back, along with Mulder’s collection of ceiling pencils and the also-iconic “I want to believe” poster. Of course, the trailer’s focus on a pair of clumsy — or cynical? — feet tearing the poster in half sets an ominous tone. What’s going to happen here? I can’t wait to see.

5. Skinner is back

What would The X-Files be without the FBI’s assistant director Walter Skinner? The beloved character went to bat for Mulder and Scully more times than I can count, so it only feels natural that he’s a part of the revival. Of course, I can’t help but wonder if Skinner has been promoted (or demoted) in the interim, but I’m sure we’ll get all sorts of juicy details when he returns with the rest of the crew.

6. The Smoking Man is back too?

Oh come on! How is this possible? He’s been killed! We saw the rocket hit his New Mexico cave-base in all its fiery glory… or did we? This final image in the trailer, accompanied by the Smoking Man’s unmistakable voice, leaves no doubt that he’s back. In what form, though, remains unknown. He could just be a flashback, or maybe he really is invincible. Either way, his appearance in the trailer had me jumping up and down in anticipation.

So, how many days do we have to wait for the revival again? Oh yeah, 116. At least that’s plenty of time for Fox to drop a few more trailers for us to revel in.

The X-Files returns to Fox Jan. 24, 2016.
