Raven-Symoné has a pretty unusual name, but if yours is a little too far out there for her taste, you can forget earning her respect.
Raven-Symoné and her fellow hosts of The View were discussing a UCLA study released this week that found people linked so-called black-sounding names — like Jamal, DeShawn or Darnell — with aggression. With a completely straight face, she said to Whoopi Goldberg — Whoopi — that she wouldn’t hire someone with an unusual name.
“Can we take back ‘racist’ and say ‘discriminatory’?” she said. “Because I think that’s a better word. And I am very discriminatory against words like the ones that they were saying in the video. I’m not about to hire you if your name is Watermelondrea. It’s just not going to happen. I’m not going to hire you.”

This is far from the first time Raven-Symoné has expressed a controversial opinion on The View. In March 2015, she said that she disagreed with the possibility of Harriet Tubman being the first woman featured on American paper currency. “No offense to everyone that’s going to be mad at me for saying this: I don’t like that idea. I think we need to move a little bit forward. Let me just preface that I understand the history, I get it. Trust me, I was taught. I was in that culture.… I would’ve chosen Rosa Parks.”
“I would have chosen someone that is closer to the progression that we’re doing now. I know you have to understand history so you don’t repeat it, but that doesn’t happen in our world, because we still repeat history of hating other cultures over and over again. I would choose a different woman, no offense.”
The same month, she defended someone for comparing black first lady Michelle Obama to an ape.
Raven-Symoné has not commented further on her controversial remarks.
