If you thought the Sister Wives‘ familial relationship was rather unorthodox, just wait until you hear the shocking connection between Janelle and Meri.
It’s no secret that Janelle, Kody Brown’s second wife, knew his first wife, Meri, before she became wife no. 2, but nothing more detailed than that was ever explained about the relationship between the two women — until now.
According to documents dug up by Radar Online, Janelle’s marriage to Kody was not the first time she walked down the aisle. She was legally wed before — and her now-ex-husband was none other than Meri’s own brother!
In the Salt Lake County Court documents, Janelle is revealed to have been married to Adam Clark Barber, Meri’s brother, making the two women sisters-in-law long before they became sister wives.
Here’s where it gets really interesting. The couple divorced in 1990 after nearly two years of marriage, but in her bio on the Sister Wives official website, Janelle says she met Kody in 1989 and it was basically love at first sight. So this means not only did she fall in love with another man while she was still married, she fell in love with her brother-in-law, then joined them in a polygamous marriage!
“I met Kody in the fall of 1989, even though he may not remember it,” Janelle’s bio reads. “When he walked into the room I looked at him and had that feeling of remembering something I had forgotten. It was a singular experience.
“I had known Meri’s family for several years before the night I met Kody.”
That’s one way of putting it.
Meri’s sister, Elaine, confirmed the prior marriage to Radar Online but refused to comment further.
This new information could explain why the relationship between Janelle and Meri has always been so strained. Not only does it appear that Janelle may have ended her marriage to pursue something with Kody, but Kody was only married to one woman at the time, and Meri was forced to step aside and share her husband.
None of the Browns have yet commented on the revelation, but they are pretty busy addressing other issues. Meri recently admitted she was catfished while conducting an Internet emotional affair. She and Kody divorced and he legally married fourth sister wife Robyn in order to adopt her children from a previous marriage for financial reasons. Meri is now struggling through a cancer scare and Robyn just announced she is pregnant again. The past might be the last thing this family wants to deal with when they have so many issues in the present.
