Women wage war on Jeremy Renner over pay gap comments

The wage gap in Hollywood has become a hot-button issue this year.

Since documents and e-mails hacked from Sony Entertainment’s servers revealed the conscious decisions made by executives to pay female stars less than their male opposites, celebrities have been coming forward to show their support for equal pay for women in Hollywood.

But Jeremy Renner is not one of those. In fact, in a recent interview with Business Insider, Renner pretty much said the opposite.

“That’s not my job,” he replied when asked whether he’d be willing to work alongside actresses on his future projects to negotiate equal pay. He added later that he doesn’t “know contracts and money and all that sort of stuff.”

While Renner does say that he supports equal pay, he’s definitely not willing to get too mixed up in the issue.

“I’m a performer and I know human behavior,” he said. “When it comes to that sort of stuff I let other people deal with that. I do what I’m good at, that’s what I focus on.”

Renner’s comments come just after Jennifer Lawrence penned a passionate essay called “Why Do I Make Less Than My Co-Stars” and Bradley Cooper vowed to stand alongside his female counterparts as they demand equitable pay.

While Renner has a valid point in saying it’s not his job to negotiate salaries — typically, agents do that — Cooper has said it’s time to change that process, while Renner’s comments say he’s all for the status quo. Women on Twitter have been taking him to task for the remarks.
