We all know it’s impossible for anything to die on the Internet.
And here we have another myth being resurrected after being long discredited, thanks to the interwebs. Gwyneth Paltrow might be a lifestyle guru, but she got this one majorly wrong.
Recently, her website Gooppublished an article that purported a link between breast cancer and bra wearing, a link that has long been debunked. The myth originates from a book written in 1995 by husband-and-wife team Sydney Ross Singer and Soma Grismaijer called Dressed to Kill: The Link Between Breast Cancer and Bras, and the Goop article was penned by Paltrow’s medical guru, Dr. Habib Sadeghi.
He claims that wearing a bra raises the temperature of breast tissue and “could alter hormone function and raise the risk of breast cancer.” He also claims that the underwire found in bras might amplify the radiation given off by your cellphone. “While the fact that your bra could absorb and intensify radiation seems preposterous, it’s not as far-fetched as it sounds.”
Actually, it is.
According to pretty much… well, the entire medical community, it’s all bogus.
“There are no scientifically valid studies that show wearing bras of any type causes breast cancer,” says the American Cancer Society. The theory that breast cancer is caused by an accumulation of toxins due to restricted lymph node drainage is, according to the American Cancer Society, “inconsistent with scientific concepts of breast physiology and pathology.”

A well-known San Francisco-area OB-GYN, Jennifer Gunter, ripped into the celeb’s site for publishing such scaremongering. She said this on her blog on Tuesday: “It’s so ludicrous that it should be funny, except some women will read this and be scared.”
Gunter claimed Sadeghi’s explanation is “biologically implausible” and says “the myth has been debunked so many times I have lost track.”

Gunter concludes, “Ladies, wear your bra or don’t. Your choice. Heck wear your bra to bed if it’s comfortable. It’s all good. If it’s digging in get a fitting from an expert, not because it could be building up toxins but because everyone should know the joy of a well-fitting bra.”
Amen, sister.
Hopefully, women aren’t deceived by Sadeghi’s junk science and scare tactics. After all, he is the man who coined the phrase “conscious uncoupling” and honestly, after that, who can take him seriously?
