The curmudgeonly British producer hasn’t been seen on American TV since Fox’s The X Factor was canceled in 2013, but that’s about to change.
Cowell announced Thursday that he will join the upcoming 11th season of America’s Got Talent, just about the only talent competition show that hasn’t featured him on its panel of judges. And fans immediately celebrated Cowell’s return to U.S. screens with excited tweets.

Cowell was one of the original judges on Fox’s wildly successful American Idol. He’s also judged acts on Britain’s Got Talent, launching such stars as One Direction, Fifth Harmony and Susan Boyle. He revealed during his announcement that he’s always wanted to judge the American version of the show, but the timing was never right until now, when he will replace outgoing judge Howard Stern.
“About five or six years ago, I was offered the chance to be on the show and, at the time, I couldn’t do it. But I was a bit disappointed that I wasn’t able to,” Cowell told USA Today. “For the years (Howard Stern) was on the show, he did a great job. I think at the point we really knew Howard wasn’t going to come back, we then had serious conversations with NBC. I thought, ‘I think this is the right time.’ So, I’m excited about it.”
He continued, “I would love to be able to bring in better singers and groups and give them… a great platform, because we have a good history of breaking music acts from the British show and the other shows around the world. But I’m just as excited to try and find the next David Copperfield or great comedian or great dance act or great animal act. You go in with your eyes wide open on this show.”
