Who doesn’t love reading a good celebrity memoir? It’s fascinating to learn about what a celebrity was like as a child and how that shaped who they are today. I love glimpsing how they struggled on their rise to fame and how they chose the paths that led them where they are today.
Some memoirs are funny, some are serious and some are really long and hard to read until the end. Don’t give up on the long, hard reads. Those stories show that a person has had a life rich with strife, and you just might learn something reading them. I find that in the end, we are not alone in our struggles — even the rich and famous struggle.
Don’t miss these 10 celebrity memoirs:
1. Bossypants by Tina Fey
This is a quick, hilarious read that gives good insight into how Tina Fey became so funny, and what her mommy beauty secrets are. We also learn how she got the scar on her face, the one that makes her even more endearingly beautiful, and what turning forty means to her.
2. Stories I Only Tell My Friends by Rob Lowe
If you grew up in the ’80s, this is a must-read for you — especially if you had a crush on any member of the Brat Pack. Rob Lowe is a really cool guy, and he totally proves it with this book. Plus, it’s fun to read about his childhood and all the people he used to play with. Who knew then what they would all become?
3. Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher
Carrie Fisher has openly struggled with mental illness. She puts her struggles in a hilarious light in this book, where she discusses Princess Leia, shock treatments and being the daughter of someone famous.
4. My Life So Far by Jane Fonda
Jane Fonda has lived quite a life. This is a pretty long read, but her fascinating life is well worth your time. She talks about her relationship with her father, Henry, her activism in the ’60s and ’70s and how she’s embracing her life today.
5. Open by Andre Agassi
Not only is this one of my favorite memoirs, it’s one of my favorite books. Andre Agassi breaks himself wide open for this honest look at his life, his triumphs on the tennis court and the struggles in his personal life.
6. Seriously… I’m Kidding by Ellen Degeneres
A quick and funny read, which you may need after reading some of the more intense memoirs on this list. Ellen gives you a look at her past relationships, her secret to life and some tips on which color looks good on everyone.
7. Losing It by Valerie Bertinelli
This memoir ties into Valerie Bertinelli’s relationship with Jenny Craig; but at the same time, it is a look into the life of America’s 1970s Sweetheart. She discusses her life during One Day at a Time and her marriage to Eddie Van Halen, before moving on to the second phase of her life.
8. Me: Stories of My Life by Katharine Hepburn
A memoir written by one of Hollywood’s trailblazers? Yes, please! Hepburn might not have been perfect, but we learn how she stayed true to herself in Hollywood, stayed fiercely independent and fostered her need to wear slacks while the rest of Hollywood’s leading ladies were wearing dresses.
9. Audition by Barbara Walters
Barbara Walters had a very interesting childhood and rise through the ranks as a newscaster before becoming the ultimate journalist. She discusses personal relationships, adopting her daughter and her illustrious career. This long book is definitely worth the read.
10. A Lotus Grows in the Mud by Goldie Hawn
Goldie Hawn is known for her infectious laugh, her bigger than life smile and her lust for life. Her childhood in Washington D.C. was as magical as you might expect, and her dream of becoming a Broadway dancer set her on the path to who she is today.
