DWTS‘ Derek Hough knocked from his freestyle pedestal by a Halloween nightmare

It was a hair-raising night on Dancing with the Stars, as Derek Hough’s freestyle reign ended, Leah Remini got scared out of her wits and the Halloween elimination left some stunned fans booing.

Halloween Week on Dancing with the Stars had celebrities and pros dancing in costumes to spooky themes and songs. Leah Remini was back as guest cohost, covering for Erin Andrews, and the contestants were split into two groups for a spooky freestyle competition.

The dances

Bindi Irwin and Derek Hough claimed the top of the Dancing with the Stars leaderboard with a perfect score for their flawless Argentine tango featuring Irwin as the queen of the vampires. Carlos PenaVega and Witney Carson’s Phantom of the Opera-themed paso doble had them in second place, with Alexa PenVega and Mark Ballas rounding out the top three. They also performed a paso doble, which had fans talking due to Ballas’ remarkable costume, characterization and choreography as Edward Scissorhands.

On the bottom of the DWTS leaderboard were Tamar Braxton and Val Chmerkovskiy, who did a foxtrot to “People are Strange,” which unfortunately contained a few mistakes. The judges once again pointed out a certain “disconnect” between the two. At the end of their dance, when Braxton and Chmerkovskiy were interviewed by Leah Remini, one of the highlights of the show came when pro dancer Sasha Farber put on a clown mask and scared Remini. The guest cohost was so startled she dove to the floor!

Team freestyle dances

Bindi Irwin and Nick Carter were declared the team captains for the Dancing with the Stars group freestyle efforts, based on previous scores. Irwin headed Team Who You Gonna Call and Carter led Team Nightmare. There was plenty of talk about Derek Hough’s famous winning streak before the dancing got underway, as he had never lost a DWTS team freestyle competition in the history of the show. Team Nightmare did their freestyle to a song from The Nightmare Before Christmas that featured costumes and choreography that perfectly captured the spirit of the Tim Burton film. It earned a perfect 30 points from the judges. Team Who You Gonna Call danced their freestyle performance to the theme from Ghostbusters. It was really fun and entertaining and featured some amazing lifts done on hoverboards. However, a mistake that put them out of sync near the beginning cost them the win as they earned only 28 points. Tom Bergeron awkwardly noted Hough’s first loss at the prompting of producers.

Elimination

The Dancing with the Stars elimination this week turned out to be a scary situation, as Tamar Braxton and Val Chmerkovskiy found themselves in jeopardy despite earning a perfect score last week. Hayes Grier and Emma Slater were also in trouble, even with Grier’s huge following on Vine, and Alexa PenaVega and Mark Ballas rounded out the bottom three. In the end, Hayes Grier, who spent most weeks in the middle of the pack, was sent home.
