According to Yahoo! News, the Sherlock star has been dealing with police after he said an obsessed female fan visited his family’s home to leave him bizarre messages. The site reports police have found a suspect and have taken action.

According to reports, the woman tied red ribbons to objects on Cumberbatch’s North London property, including his car and a window to his home.

The red ribbons may be in reference to the original SherlockHolmes novel, written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In the story, Holmes tells his assistant, Dr. Watson, “There’s the scarlet thread of murder running through the colorless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, isolate it, and expose every inch of it.”

According to a source close to Cumberbatch’s family, the star was “left shaken” by the incidents. He reported them to police, who gave the woman an official Police Information Notice for harassment, which works similarly to a no-contact order in the U.S. — the woman is no longer allowed to contact Cumberbatch or his family. Cumberbatch lives in the home that was targeted with his wife, Sophie, and their newborn son, Christopher.

Security has also been stepped up at the Barbican Theatre in London, where Cumberbatch is currently starring in a production of Hamlet.

“Benedict is used to people mobbing him wherever he goes and he’s a good sport about it,” an insider told reporters after news broke of the star’s stalker. “But this individual has taken things to the next level and there was no option but to pursue official action. Turning up at professional event is one thing, but arriving uninvited at the family home is quite another. It might be that she thinks it’s harmless, but it does feel a bit sinister. Leaving red ribbons is obviously a bit of a game, but it does feel quite dark.”
