During his appearance last night on The Late Show With Seth Meyers, Shelton explained that he’s well-aware of the uncomfortable situation he’ll be walking into when the awards show takes place in just a couple of weeks.

“This year’s gonna be awkward at the CMAs, speaking of jokes, because we are, it’s such a family,” Shelton told Meyers. “Everybody there is friends.”

To which Meyers tried to insist that his “friends” wouldn’t do that to him.

But Shelton disagreed, saying, “There’s gotta be one about me and Miranda. [Host] Brad Paisley is not doing his job if he doesn’t look down there and go, ‘Ha ha!’ You have to address the elephant in the room. We’ve had the conversations like, ‘Okay, dude. I’ll sit there and let you kick me in the face a few times.’ I know it’s coming.”

This will be Shelton and Lambert’s first solo CMAs carpet in eight years, according to Us Weekly.

The couple divorced in July 2015 after a four-year marriage and a relationship that has been going on since 2007.

Fans felt that the split came out of nowhere, and even Shelton agreed that it happened extremely quickly.

“In Oklahoma, it happens so fast,” he said during an interview on The Bobby Bones Show. “Like Miranda and I didn’t have any kids, and we had a prenuptial agreement, whatever we had. Once we filed for divorce, it was over in, like — I think we had a nine or 10-day waiting period until it’s over.”

The Country Music Awards show airs on Wednesday, Nov. 4.
