Even though her divorce from Blake Shelton is still news, country music’s Miranda Lambert was nearly invisible at tonight’s Country Music Awards… until she took the stage and broke everyone’s collective heart.
The CMAs took off with a bang, what with cohosts Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood making quite a few jokes about Lambert and Shelton’s divorce. With rumors that Shelton is dating Gwen Stefaniconfirmed just hours before tonight’s CMAs, the jokes felt in poor taste.

The camera panned to Shelton yucking it up a few times, but Lambert was conspicuously left offscreen, leaving many wondering if she was even in the audience. It wasn’t until the end of the three-hour telecast that we got to see Lambert, when she finally took the stage to perform her song, “Bathroom Sink.” Lambert’s pink-tipped hair did nothing to hide a very emotional performance from the audience.
@mirandalambert Heads up girly. You are great so show it. Looked so sad on the CMAs TONIGHT. Not your perky self. Love ya

My heart is broke because Miranda Lambert is actually really sad about her and Blake💔😢😢

The somber atmosphere remained even after Lambert won the award for Female Vocalist of the Year. Taking the stage, she kept her speech super short and super sad.
“Hi, guys, thank you so much,” Lambert began. “I appreciated it. I needed a bright spot this year. I’m just going to keep it short; Justin Timberlake and Chris Stapleton, thank y’all. I’m going to go home and practice. Thank y’all so much.”

Ouch! “Bright spot” is probably an understatement, and we rarely see celebrities wearing their hearts on their sleeves like that. Twitter users were touched and many sent heartwarming tweets of comfort to the country star.
Ohh @mirandalambert prayers for you love you and wish you so much happiness… seeing you hurting makes me sad… congrats on your cma award

It makes me sad seeing Miranda Lambert make her speech so short like you can tell it's because she's so heartbroken and in front of her ex

@mirandalambert congratulations! You are so loved pretty girl. Hate to see you look sad. Wishing you happier days ahead.

We’re with these Twitter users! We hated to see the normally chipper singer so low and we hope she’s back to her sunnier self soon. It can’t be easy living life in the public sphere, and then to have your ex and his new girlfriend making news at an event you and him were cuddled up together at only a year ago? Who wouldn’t be feeling the pain?

Hopefully the fact that Lambert just took home her sixth Female Vocalist of the Year award will indeed be the bright spot she said she needed. And if there’s one truth about country music, it’s that terrible heartbreak makes for great music. If Lambert channels the pain she’s gone through this year, we’re willing to bet she’ll be picking up another statue in 2016!
