Cora and her wife, Jennifer, have been married for 17 years. They released a statement Monday about their decision to end their relationship.

“It is with great sadness, that after 17 years, a tremendous amount work, careful consideration and heavy hearts, my wife and I have mutually decided to no longer remain married,” Cora told People magazine. “In love, there is a season, a reason and a lifetime.”

Forty-eight-year-old Cora and 44-year-old Jennifer have four children together — Zoran, 11, Caje, 8, Nash, 6, and Thatcher, 6 — all sons they conceived via in vitro fertilization and carried by Cora and her wife.

“Although this is not what we ever imagined, we will always have four incredible reasons to celebrate our years together: our sons,” Cora continued. “We are forever parents to our boys and are jointly committed to raising them in a peaceful, nurturing and healthy environment.”

According to People, Cora, who was the first-ever female Iron Chef, revealed in a 2010 interview with the magazine the unconventional path she and her wife followed to motherhood.

“The doctor implanted Jennifer and me with each other’s eggs,” she said. “So she gave birth to Caje, but he’s my biological child. I carried Nash, but he’s Jennifer’s biological child.”

She continued, “As a same-sex couple, we had to go back and legally adopt them. Even though Nash was her biological son, Jennifer had to adopt him. Same with me and Caje.”

Our thoughts are with Cora and her wife during this difficult time.
