Pretty Little Liars: Will the new ‘big bad’ be anything like A? (VIDEO)

On Tuesday night on ABC Family, Pretty Little Liars fans will finally have some questions answered about Season 6B during the special Pretty Little Liars: 5 Years Forward. The cast gathers to discuss the new season and what viewers can expect now that the girls are five years older and living an A-free life.

In an exclusive video from the special shared by ETOnline, executive producer I. Marlene King, Lucy Hale, Ashley Benson, Shay Mitchell, Troian Bellisario, Keegan Allen, Ian Harding and Tyler Blackburn share details about the new “big bad” who will be featured heavily throughout 6B. So, will this villain be anything like A? It sure doesn’t seem like it, and here’s hoping he or she isn’t, because a different type of antagonist will bring an even fresher feel to the series.

As King teases in the video, “Alison brings you guys back because she needs your help with Charlotte, but an event occurs that forces you guys to stay in Rosewood, and, out of that event, a new big bad is born.” Well, that sure doesn’t sound ominous.

Like A, the Liars do start to receive messages, but it’s not the same as with Charlotte. Bellisario reveals, “They know it’s not from Charlotte, and this time it feels very different.” She continues, “This time it’s no longer about, ‘I’m going to expose some secret that you have,’ or ‘I’m going to ruin, like, your chances of getting the orchid scholarship.’ It’s paranoia, it’s blackmail, it’s a life-threatening situation.”

Now that the girls are older, it seems like the so-called big bad won’t be treating them like the high-schoolers fans once knew, but rather as the adults they are now. Allen goes as far as to call it a “manipulation game,” and that it’s “very, very dark and twisted.”

Thankfully, Hanna, Aria, Spencer and Emily are going to take action immediately when it comes to their latest adversary. “Because it’s life or death so quickly, you guys fight back right away,” King explains. “You’re not victims, you’re on top of this right away, and I think that’s a big difference between moving forward and the past.”

It will be interesting to see if the new villain is truly different from A once the new season begins. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed that he or she is, because I’m sure fans are ready for a major change from A.

Pretty Little Liars returns with Season 6B on Tuesday, Jan. 12, on Freeform, the new name for ABC Family.
