During Will Smith’s most recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, he revealed that his marriage to his wife Jada Pinkett Smith is exactly like every other marriage on the planet: hard work.
He said that in the 20 years they have been together, they have had their fair share of ups and downs, explaining, “You can’t expect it to be easy. It’s like our marriage was the most difficult, grueling, excruciating thing that we have ever taken on in our lives. And you know we’re just not quitters.”
He offered this sage wisdom on the secret to their success, too, saying, “If there is a secret I would say it is that we never went into working on our relationship. We only ever worked on ourselves individually, and then presented ourselves to one another better than we were previously.”
Smith and Pinkett Smith were married in 1997, and the pair has not been without their divorce rumors. In August, Smith took to social media to defend his marriage after unfounded rumors began to spread that the pair was settling a $240 million divorce after allegations of cheating on both sides.
He said in a tweet, “…in the interest of redundant, repetitious, over & over-again-ness… Jada and I are NOT GETTING A DIVORCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
And Pinkett Smith has always had her husband’s back, responding to his message with, “My king has spoken.” The pair has often displayed their affection publicly, especially on momentous occasions such as birthdays.
Smith posted the most precious throwback photo and sweet sentiment for Pinkett Smith’s birthday in September of last year, saying, “Happy Birthday, My Love. We’ve been together at your last 20 birthday parties. Let’s go for 50 or 60 more.” Pinkett Smith wrote on her Facebook page in honor of Smith’s birthday, “You have 100 percent of my heart and the rest of my days.”
Smith calling their marriage difficult — grueling, even — makes them just like the rest of us living life with a significant other in a committed relationship: trying to do our best for ourselves and for each other, because everyone knows good relationships take work, and hard work at that.
