In case you somehow managed to miss Charlie Puth and Meghan Trainor’s major makeout sesh at the American Music Awards, Puth has something to add to the record of public opinion.
But first, let’s rewind a bit to that steamy moment fans can’t stop talking about — the grand finale of Puth and Trainor’s performance of “Marvin Gaye” at the AMAs.

I mean, sure, the lyrics aren’t exactly innocent. But that doesn’t mean we were actually expecting these two singers to punctuate their collaboration by living out the lyrics, “Let’s Marvin Gaye and get it on.”
Perhaps it was the collective jaw drop of the entire viewing audience that clued Puth and Trainor into the fact that their finale would soon be all anyone could discuss, so the stars set out to make it abundantly clear they are not an item.
Trainor Instagrammed a pic of the onstage kiss, hashtagging the photographic PDA evidence “#ImSingle.” For his part, Puth tried to put out the word prior to the performance, tweeting, “Before it begins… we are just friends.” He also hinted during several pre-show radio interviews that there could be a staged kiss.
Do you hear that, you guys? That kiss was all for show.
However, me thinketh Puth may protest too much — he’s pulling overtime in the trying-to-convince-everyone-it-was-platonic department. “I have a girl kind of in my life right now that I’m not making too public and I don’t want people to get the wrong idea [about the kiss with Meghan],” he stressed to USA Today.

But here’s where Puth starts to suffer from a little foot-in-mouth disorder, continuing in the interview, “But without Meghan’s initial push, I wouldn’t really be anywhere. Meghan really helped me by being featured on my first record.”
Hmm. While it’s likely his words aren’t coming across as he intended, it almost sounds like he’s shifting the responsibility for the kiss to Trainor. It takes two to Marvin Gaye and get it on, am I right? It sounds like Puth’s seemingly enthusiastic participation could quite possibly have landed him in hot water with his kind-of girlfriend.
After all, the kiss was awfully convincing. After watching the playback, surely Puth and Trainor can understand how people might be confused.
Puth has an explanation for that, too, though. Discussing the kiss the morning after on , Puth admitted they had rehearsed the moment and discussed how it might go down. And Puth himself put some considerable thought into it beforehand.
“I was, like, all nervous before,” he told the deejays. “Like, how am I going to make this look real, because I’m not attracted to her in that way.” He goes on to explain that his “natural boy instincts just, like, kicked in,” but that he thinks it’s unfair for people to say he “engulfed” her.
Still, when pressed about just how casual the kiss was, Puth does confess “there was a little bit of tongue” before backpedaling and trying to pass it off as “mostly lip action.”
No word yet on his thought process behind that ass grab, though.
