The Vampire Diaries delivered tonight on maybe the most heartbreaking death since Katherine.

Lily died in an attempt to save her Heretics, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder), from Julian. Unfortunately, Julian had unlinked their bond, which meant that Lily died and Julian is still lurking about Mystic Falls.
But it wasn’t Lily’s death, exactly, that had us reaching for the tissues.
Rather, it was Damon’s reaction to the whole situation. He refused, even until the end, to forgive his mother for leaving when he was a child.
As Stefan put it, she was the first woman to break his heart, so he wasn’t going to let it go so easily, even with her begging for his forgiveness and giving a pretty good excuse for bailing. But not even her deathbed could stir his empathy. Instead, he told her that she had made her bed and now she had to lay in it just as her veins turned black and she died.

Even worse, through the episode the flash-forwards seemed to promise us that Lily was still alive. But it turned out to be just Damon’s werewolf blood-induced hallucinations as he told his mother he was so very sorry. Unfortunately, it wasn’t his mother. Because, as the haughty female voice told him, she died years ago, before the mysterious girl kicked him in the face.
Now, I wasn’t really necessarily a Lily fan. But I definitely wasn’t expecting to see her go so soon. And she had definitely been growing on me over the last few episodes. I’m absolutely sold on the Heretics!
But now that Lily is gone, it brings up so many questions about what’s next for the gang, but particularly, questions about what’s next for Damon, since we saw in the flash-forward that he deeply regrets the way he treated Lily.
And we should all know by now how Damon reacts to extreme emotions. He drinks a lot. Whether it be whiskey or blood, Damon goes on chugging sprees.
Judging by the sneak peek for next week’s episode, there’s going to be a serious “Santa slaying,” and something tells me Damon might be the killer.

I’ve been waiting for some good brotherly bloodlust this season. And Lily might have perfectly paved the way for an angsty Damon. Admittedly, I was hoping for the bad boy shift when Elena left, as well, but Damon seems to be hell-bent on being honorable while she’s gone. But bad Damon is just so much fun! And we haven’t seen him in full force in so long.
Could his guilt over Lily’s death finally be the key to some Damon-esque moments?
