Fuller House spoilers: The Olsen twins aren’t completely absent

Fans of Full House have known for months that Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen declined to reprise their role as Michelle Tanner in the upcoming Netflix series Fuller House, a reboot of the ‘90s series. But fear not — audiences wondering about Michelle’s life will still receive an answer.

Us Weeklyreports that Michelle will be a presence on Fuller House, just not a physical one. Rather than recasting the role, the creative team has developed an elaborate backstory for the youngest Tanner daughter, involving a life in New York City as a fashion designer. Michelle isn’t able to visit San Francisco often, it seems, but she stays in touch with her family on the phone; in one episode of Fuller House, a character reportedly prank-calls Michelle, delivering her iconic “You got it, dude!” catchphrase.

If this backstory development sounds familiar to fans, that’s because the real-life Olsen twins have abandoned acting for fashion design. They launched their flagship brand, The Row, in 2006 and have been designing and marketing high-end clothing, eyewear and handbags for the past decade. At only 29 years old, the twins are highly respected in the industry; in 2012, they were honored with the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s prestigious Womenswear Designer of the Year award. It remains to be seen whether Michelle Tanner will have an equally established career — hopefully D.J. and Stephanie will sport some of her looks on occasion.

Much of the Full House cast will be reprising their former roles, however. In a twist on the original series’ premise, Fuller House will follow D.J. Tanner-Fuller’s life as a widow raising three children. Younger sister Stephanie and childhood best friend Kimmy Gibbler — along with Kimmy’s teenage daughter — move in with D.J. in her San Francisco house. Guest appearances by other original stars will pop up along the way. During production, Candace Cameron Bure teased the involvement of Dave Coulier (playing D.J.’s surrogate uncle, Joey) and Scott Weinger (playing D.J.’s high school boyfriend, Steve).
