It goes without saying that a fairly obvious and pretty significant part of being a feminist is supporting other women in all their endeavours. Unfortunately model and actress Cara Delevingne is paying the price for breaking that rule.

When Delevingne posted a photo of herself and model Adwoa Aboah on Instagram over the weekend, looking completely fabulous in sweatshirts with the slogan: “The Future is Female,” she probably wasn’t prepared for the backlash.

According to Los Angeles shop and graphic design studio Otherwild Delevingne has ripped off their design — and to add insult to injury she’s selling them online (they’re available on online store Represent for $40 — around £27 — with proceeds going to Girl Up!, a charity that helps young girls in developing countries).
Delevingne and her girlfriend St. Vincent had been spotted wearing “The Future is Female” tops — but those were made by Otherwild, who were so pissed off that they posted quite a rant on their Instagram page. It’s now been deleted but they later posted a photo showing just how similar their jumper and Delevingne’s is.

Otherwild aren’t claiming to have created the slogan, which is actually a remake of a shirt worn by folk singer Alix Dobson in the ’70s bearing the name of a women’s bookshop. However Otherwild were authorised to replicate the design and we’re guessing Delevingne wasn’t.

Otherwild posted the following on their Instagram page, which pretty much says it all: “If model/actress Cara Delevingne wanted to sell my line, she would need to wholesale them from Otherwild, and because we donate 25% of our line’s proceeds to Planned Parenthood, Delevingne’s ethical practice would benefit not only our woman-owned small business but would also serve as a significant donation to PP. Delevingne could also choose not to wholesale from Otherwild and create her own design of the slogan on clothing to sell. But Delevingne’s choice to lift and manufacture Otherwild’s design, claiming it as her own to sell with an undisclosed charitable offering, is indefensible. Her actions ironically counter the very message of the slogan “The Future Is Female”, and it’s confounding that she would do this to a small queer feminist-owned business after purchasing the product from us just a few weeks ago.”
Aside from adding a “thank you” to Otherwild in the caption to her photograph and stating, “I did not steal anything, they did not create the slogan,” Delevingne hasn’t officially responded to the accusations.
