The Vampire Diaries‘ Julie Plec reveals Steroline midseason finale spoilers

Now that Stefan knows Caroline is carrying Alaric’s twin babies on The Vampire Diaries, will this be the beginning of the end for Steroline?

According to executive producer Plec in an interview with TVLine, we haven’t seen the end of their relationship just yet.

“We have a lot more story to tell with them,” Plec explained. “This episode [tonight] doesn’t really focus on Stefan and Caroline as much as it focuses on Caroline, Alaric and their babies. The babies aren’t what ultimately break them up; it will be a confluence of many little things that lead to their demise.”

But we’re guessing the babies have at least something to do with it. Stefan (Paul Wesley), after all, didn’t handle the news very well at all at first. He absolutely redeemed himself at the end of the episode. But things definitely have to be a little uncomfortable since she’s carrying another man’s twins, even if they didn’t do the dirty to make it happen.

Still, it seems like Valerie, Stefan’s long-lost love, will also probably be a factor in the breakup. Even though she and Caroline (Candice Accola) are starting to get along since she’s been helping with Caroline’s pregnancy, there is still tension between these ladies.

And whatever happens between Caroline and Stefan, it’s enough that Caroline still has some serious anger issues over it in the flash-forwards. Not only has she axed him from her life, but she isn’t interested in him coming anywhere near her again.

For a reaction like that, something extreme must be coming. But Stefan is the noble one. He isn’t going to reject her pregnant belly, rekindle things with Valerie and trash-talk Caroline. So what is it that ultimately does their relationship in? Well, we’ll have to wait until the show returns for the second half of Season 7 to find out.

The next episode will focus more on Stefan’s relationship with Damon following Lily’s death.

“In this next episode, Stefan is continuing his drive to kill Julian, and he manages to recruit Damon,” Plec revealed. “But as the brothers start working together, Stefan starts to wonder, ‘What’s going through your head, Damon? Are you starting to resent basically spitting on Mom’s grave when you had 10 seconds to tell her anything?’ Damon initially tries to blow that off, but as the episode climaxes, he realizes that it’s not going to go away… He needs to go through something big in order to come to that emotional catharsis.”

And Bonnie will also play a fun role in the Christmas-themed episode.

“Bonnie’s doing fundraising for Toys for Tots,” Plec told TVLine. “She’s having a much different Christmas, where she’s helping children and being a normal college student. Nora eases her way into that storyline and stirs up Bonnie’s world a little bit.”

The Vampire Diaries Season 7 midseason finale airs tonight on The CW.

What do you think will ultimately drive Caroline and Stefan to break things off for good?
