Bar Refaeli is in big trouble with the Israeli government

Bar Refaeli and her mother were detained for 12 hours by Israeli authorities under suspicion of tax evasion.

Supermodel Bar Refaeli has had a tough couple of days. Best known for dating Leonardo DiCaprio, hosting Israeli X Factor and modeling for Gap, Escada and Desigual, Refaeli can add a new item to her résumé: tax evader.

On Wednesday, Dec. 16, Refaeli was questioned for 12 hours by Israeli authorities. On Thursday, Dec. 17, Refaeli and her mother, Tzipi, were detained by Israeli authorities on suspicion of tax evasion.

Refaeli lives in Israel with her billionaire husband, Adi Ezra. According to the BBC, she is accused of failing to report millions of dollars worth of income and tens of thousands of dollars in “celebrity benefits.” These benefits include free cars she received in exchange for publicizing brands and a luxury apartment in Tel Aviv.

Refaeli is accused of hiding the fact that she resides in Tel Aviv. Allegedly, she lives in apartments registered to her mother and brother. Israeli residents are required to declare earnings from abroad, whereas non-residents don’t need to disclose these overseas earnings.

On Thursday, Dec. 17, Refaeli and her mother were released on $193,000 in bail.

Both she and her mother aren’t allowed to travel abroad for six months without permission from Israeli authorities and a $64,000 bond.

“There is no drama. In the end, this is just a civil dispute,” Refaeli’s lawyer, Giora Aderet, said. “No one cheated anyone else. It will all clear up soon.”

With a billionaire husband, hopefully they can afford the fines. Who knows, maybe Bravo will call and film her hanging out in Tel Aviv until it’s all cleared up. It worked out for Teresa Giudice. Well, not really because she’s still in jail, but she got a special series out of it. It sounds like the Israeli authorities are taking this seriously, though. I’m sure Refaeli would make a prison jumpsuit look good!
