Robert Durst, real estate heir and accused serial murderer, will finally stand trial for the murder he confessed to on HBO‘s The Jinx.
Look out, Los Angeles; Robert Durst is coming. Luckily for us Angelenos, he’ll be escorted (hopefully in shackles) by law enforcement to face murder charges for the 2000 shooting of his friend, Susan Berman. According to People, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office said that Durst agreed to be extradited from Louisiana by Aug. 18, 2016. It’s all thanks to HBO’s The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst.
Berman, a Las Vegas mobster’s daughter and Hollywood filmmaker, was shot in the back of the head on or around Dec. 23, 2000. The Jinx examined the circumstances of this murder, as well as that of former Durst neighbor Morris Black and the disappearance of Durst’s first wife, Kathleen Durst. The docuseries exposed key evidence in the Berman case and a confession from Durst that he “killed them all, of course.”

Just one day after the show’s finale, the Los Angeles Police Department issued an arrest warrant for Durst. He was found in New Orleans with a latex mask, a loaded revolver, marijuana, a fake ID and nearly $43,000. He’s still in New Orleans facing a federal charge for the gun, but he’s expected to reach a plea deal and be sentenced to federal prison before returning to Los Angeles.
In October, Durst’s attorney, Dick DeGuerin, told People that his client was eager for the trial in California. “He is ready for the fight. He has come to realize that this is finally his opportunity to clear his name — at trial, with fair rules, in a court that will require hard evidence.”

I think it’s safe to say they’ll have hard evidence. There’s the “Beverley Hills Police” letter informing police that there was a cadaver at Berman’s residence, which matches the handwriting on other letters written by Durst to Berman. There’s also his confession on The Jinx, not to mention the guy was just arrested in New Orleans with a fugitive serial killer tool kit.
Here’s hoping he finally gets the justice he deserves.
