Your snow day guide to streaming TV in 2016

We may be having a milder winter across Canada this year, but like it or not, meteorologists will utter the dreaded words “freezing drizzle” again soon — this is still Canada, after all. But luckily, there’s a whole whack of new shows coming to Netflix, CraveTV and Shomi that’ll help you turn any snow day into a productive couch and nacho day — go on, you deserve it.

From frenetic thrillers to female-centric comedy, there’s something for everyone coming to a screen near your couch.

Mr. Robot: Shomi

I can’t wait to get into Mr. Robot when Shomi streams the first season on Jan. 8. Directed by TheGirlWiththeDragonTattoo’s Neil Arden Oplev, the show stars actor Rami Malek, who plays the oddball hacker Elliot Alderson — a character with social anxiety disorder who forges connections to the world around him via a computer screen. Things start to go haywire in this cyber-thriller when Alderson is recruited by an anarchist organization, led by Christian Slater as Mr. Robot, to help destroy corporate America as we know it.

GraceandFrankie Season 2: Netflix

Grace and Frankie will be returning to their usual antics with a second season on Netflix Canada in 2016. Thrust together in an unlikely roommate situation when their husbands come out as secret lovers, the two mismatched women are forced to contend with each other on a daily basis in the first season — leading both to catastrophe and endearing moments of genuine female friendship. Hopefully, we’ll get to see them getting into trouble with comical dates gone wrong and the cringingly awkward but hilarious moments that made Season 1 so fun to watch.

FullerHouse: Netflix

So this is happening… I’m not sure how long I’m going to last watching FullHouse’s stars — Bob Saget, John Stamos, Lori Loughlin, Dave Coulier, Candace Cameron Bure and Jodie Sweetin — attempt to resuscitate the show two decades later. But I’d be doing my elementary-school self — and an entire generation of women who used to have inappropriate crushes on Uncle Jessie as little girls — a disservice if I didn’t, at least, give Fuller House a chance when it premieres on Netflix Canada on Feb. 26.

Billions: CraveTV

CraveTV landed slick Showtime financial drama Billions, which features a stacked cast including Paul Giamatti, Damian Lewis, Maggie Siff and Swedish-Canadian Malin Ackerman. In this tense new series, expect to hear Giamatti — who plays U.S. attorney Chuck Rhoades — utter heavy dialogue like: “A good matador doesn’t kill a fresh bull. You wait until he’s been stuck a few times,” as he goes after flashy hedge fund kingpin Bobby “Axe” Axelrod (Lewis). Pencil in Jan. 17 on your calendar, because that’s when this fresh new series debuts.

And that’s not all! Check out the full list of shows hitting Netflix Canada in 2016 here. You may just start hoping for bad weather or any excuse to stay inside!
