Natalie Cole, legendary singer, has died at 65

Grammy-winning artist Natalie Cole died yesterday, December 31.

According to People, Cole died of complications from a heart condition at Los Angeles’ Cedar Mount Sinai Center. She was 65.

Her son, Robert Yancy, and sisters Timolin and Casey Cole shared a statement with the press, “Natalie fought a fierce, courageous battle, dying how she lived… with dignity, strength and honor. Our beloved Mother and sister will be greatly missed and remain UNFORGETTABLE in our hearts forever.”

Cole was the daughter of iconic jazz and R&B singer Nat King Cole and singer Maria Hawkins Cole, and a legend in her own right. She had won nine Grammys, including five for her debut album “Inseparable.”

Cole was open about her struggle with heroin addiction throughout career. “I’ve been to hell and back. I have seen the edge. I have seen the dark side of life,” she wrote in her book. She was arrested for possession of heroin in 1975 in Toronto, Canada, and entered rehab in 1983.

“You shouldn’t have regrets. I’d say instead that I’ve learned a lot of lessons. Yes, I could have handled some things better. But they’ve also made me who I am today. I like myself so much more than I did even five years ago. I can’t think of anything I wish I hadn’t done, even with this hepatitis,” she told People.
