The Biggest Loser Season 17 could be the most emotional yet

Sob stories are nothing new on The Biggest Loser. Some viewers complain that these tales of adversity get old quickly, but others believe that they make the show more relatable. Tonight’s sad story certainly tugged at viewers’ heartstrings — and it is just one of several touching moments in what promises to be a super-emotional season.

The ability of contestants to triumph over adversity is what makes The Biggest Loser so appealing, and their victories are much sweeter when viewers understand just how much these contestants have had to overcome. The sad stories that add an emotional wallop are an expected element of any Biggest Loser episode, but after over a decade, longtime viewers are still continually surprised by how sad they get during the premiere.

There were plenty of tearjerking moments during tonight’s episode of The Biggest Loser, but the most significant occurred during a chat with new host Bob Harper. Tonsheia Grandison shared a tragic story of an incident that took place 15 years ago and has been holding her back ever since. When she was just 20 years old, Grandison’s 13-month-old son drowned in a backyard pool. She feels that she is to blame for this tragedy, as, at the time of the drowning, she didn’t “have [her] life together.”

Grandison’s story had a clear impact on the other Biggest Loser contestants, several of whom had tears in their eyes. Harper didn’t get teary eyed, but he did initially seem taken aback by the tragedy Grandison faced. Viewers were every bit as saddened by this story as Harper and the new Biggest Loser cast. Several shared their responses on Twitter.

However, crazier things have happened, and, with the support of so many kindhearted cast members, it just might be possible for Grandison to finally forgive herself and move on with her life.
