We loved Eddie Redmayne in Les Miserables. And in The Theory of Everything. And for his tartan suits on the red carpet. But we love him most of all for doing his bit to help struggling actors trying to forge a career in London.

It’s not news that living in the capital on a budget is near impossible. But we did learn a couple of things from Redmayne’s recent interview with GQ.
First of all, some folk have no qualms about writing to rich people asking them for money. And second of all, some of those rich people actually do it.
One of them being Redmayne, who told the magazine that he understands that “it’s impossibly expensive” to live in London.
“I get letters from people trying to go to drama school and needing to pay their rent. And so that’s something I occasionally do,” he said.

Redmayne graduated from Cambridge but didn’t go to drama school himself, instead working as a waiter while looking for acting work. His parents lived in London so he was able to work in the city and attend auditions without paying astronomical rent, which he described as “the greatest privilege.”
The 33-year-old actor, who is married to PR executive Hannah Bagshawe (the couple are reportedly expecting their first child in June), is being tipped for an Oscar nomination for his role in transgender drama The Danish Girl. He already has a stack of awards, having won Best Actor gongs for The Theory Of Everything at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes and Oscars.
However all that fame and fortune doesn’t seem to have gone to his head and he clearly hasn’t forgotten what it’s like to scrimp and save to make ends meet while waiting for that big role.
